Spicy Naengmyun (냉면) from Yuchun Korean Restaurant

Being the good Korean boy that I am, there are a handful of foods that I can never get enough of no matter how often I eat them.  Kimchi.  Ddeokbokki.  Jjajangmyun.  And of course naengmyun.  And in my opinion, the restaurant that serves the best naengmyun is Yuchun.  If you have never had naengmyun before, it is a cold, buckwheat noodle dish, which is usually served in an icy broth (mul naengmyun), or in a gochujang based sauce (bibim naengmyun).  Yuchun offers their naengmyun in a way that combines elements of both styles, and it is bliss in every slurp. Grade: ★★★★★ (5 out of 5)

I know I’m not gonna get many people agreeing with me, but I think natto is fantastic! Yeah, it smells. Yeah, it’s sticky. Yeah, the texture feels weird. But give it another chance, and I think you’ll come around. What makes this cold udon dish even better is the addition of another slimy ingredient, yamaimo. Individually each component is great, but together they make for a wonderfully delicious meal. The price is reasonable (around $13), and you will leave reasonably full. Grade: ★★★★☆ (4 out of 5)

OK…I’m not trying to knock on Kissaten because I know how great a place it is for the struggling college student with it’s open 24 hour-ness and WiFi. But damn the clam chowder was bad. It was bland, the chunks of clams had a bunch of sand in them, and I left feeling a bit ill. Well, maybe the feeling ill part is a bit mean, but there’s no worse feeling than having sand grind in the back of your molars when you just wanna enjoy a tasty bowl of chowder. The $6 price tag was reasonable for the portion size, but I don’t think I’ll be ordering it again any time soon. But on the positive side, it did make for a pretty appetizing looking picture. Grade: ★☆☆☆☆ (1 out of 5)
